I recently bought a System76 Lemur laptop and have been running it with Xubuntu, which is Ubuntu with XFCE Desktop Environment. So far, the experience has been great. However, I encountered an issue that caused my screen to freeze whenever I closed the laptop lid and reopened it. I couldn’t do anything on the screen except move the mouse, and had to end up rebooting my laptop every time this happened.

After researching online, I found a solution to my problem. It turned out that the XFCE4 Screensaver was the culprit. It would freeze my screen, making it impossible to continue using my computer. Fortunately, I stumbled across a workaround that has helped resolve the issue for me.

Here are the steps to fix the issue:

  1. Remove xfce4-screensaver using the following command as a superuser:
sudo apt-get remove xfce4-screensaver
  1. Install light-locker (a lightweight locker that doesn’t seem to cause the screen freeze issue) using the following command as a superuser:
sudo apt-get install light-locker

This simple workaround has helped me resolve the screen freezing issue on my System76 Lemur. Now, whenever I close my laptop’s lid and open it back up, my screen works perfectly fine. I hope this solution helps others who may be experiencing the same problem. The next problem I am looking into is having the computer remember my settings for displays when I connect back to my dock.
